Let’s make this an easy one.

A recent development in the filming of director Sanjoy Nag’s Memories in March, which stars Deepti Naval and director-turned-actor Rituparno Ghosh, has caused the film to be touted as probably the first film to have done something. In what respect is this film a first?

Can be easily googled, but try answering without it first….

Happy quizzing, and have a nice life, folks!

Five answers, but only pritfloyd and Subhajyoti have what I was looking for. This is probably the first movie ever to change its language because of the leading lady. It was supposed to have been shot in Bengali, but Deepti Naval was so uncomfortable with it that the film-makers decided to shoot it in Hindi!

Five subjects, five questions, and 24 hours to answer them all!

  1. General. What is the national aquatic animal of India?
  2. Entertainment. The goodie bag included the latest Nokia mobile phone, Tag Hauer watches, t-shirts and a letter written personally by Farah Khan, among other things. Who were the recipients, and why were they given this?
  3. Technology. The new versions of which operating system, released invariably after every six months, are named after animals?
  4. Business. Which soft drink of today derives its name from whiskey that was illegally produced during the prohibition era in the USA?
  5. Sports. Who was the sports coach of Sylvester Stallone when he played a footballer in Escape to Victory?

Happy quizzing, and have a nice life, folks!

Five answers, and no all-correct ones, though Mahendra and pritfloyd did come close. Here are the answers.

  1. Gangetic dolphin. According to the website of the Indian Government, it is just the River dolphin, which most have mentioned. However, look at the scientific name, which specifically mentions the Ganges. Hence, Gangetic dolphin.
  2. These were the goodie bags given by Shah Rukh to all those 30-31 stars and veterans who appeared in the Deewangi song from Om Shanti Om because they would not accept any money.
  3. Only pritfloyd got it correct. It’s Ubuntu Linux. Mac OSes do not release new versions exactly after six months.
  4. Mountain Dew, which was what moonshine whiskey, a bootleg product, was once called.
  5. Gordon Banks.

In one of his stories, X mentions that one Iqbal Singh once wrote to him, claiming that X was his long-lost brother, separated from their family during the Partition of India and Pakistan. Apparently, X had revealed his real name in an interview, and it was the same as Iqbal’s younger brother. Iqbal had lost his younger brother and sister, the two youngest persons in his family, while travelling from Pakistan to India during the Partition.

Years later, when Iqbal had gone to the funeral of family-friend Afzal Chacha, they had found the little girl now grown and married into a Muslim family, bearing the name Dilshad. It had convinced Iqbal Singh that he would find his youngest brother, nicknamed Punni. He did not even pay attention to X’s letter, which said that X was already 11 years old and living in Delhi when the partition took place.

X finally met Iqbal’s family in 1985, and eight years later, when Iqbal informed him that his (Iqbal’s) father, whom his children called Darji, had died, X wrote that he felt as if his own Darji had passed away.

Identify X. Hint: X has an active interest in astronomy, and even wrote a whole poem when Pluto was ‘demoted’ from planet-status.

SPOLER ALERT: For those of you who missed it, look for the scene where Vivaan Shah, after receiving a medical degree, goes back to Priyanka, a 50-year-old. She’s reading this book, The Seven Wives of Bluebeard, before she asks Vivaan to have her body by getting naked in front of him. Additional funda: the woman whose back is shown in the film is actually a 50-year-old woman, and not our PC. She personally chose this old lady for that scene.

Seven replies, but only four are on the right track. PS: I had already asked a similar question earlier, albeit with a different visual. The first 10 Amar Chitra Katha (ACK) comics were based on foreign fairy tales, and those are shown here in different Indian languages they were translated to. The 11th, based on the life of Lord Krishna, was the first truly Indian ACK, and hence often regarded thus.

Five wonderful answers! During his acceptance speech for the Best Actor Oscar in Philadelphia, Tom Hanks actually mentioned the names of his drama teacher and one of his classmates, saying that he drew inspiration from them for being gay for the role. However, these two people were still ‘in the closet’ at that time, and Hanks, in effect, actually ‘out’-ed them to the whole world!
