Four answers, and all of them correct! This is indeed the first daguerreotype photograph to have survived the process of daguerreotyping. And World Photography Day, celebrated on August 19, yesterday, this year marks the invention of daguerreotyping, the first ever process to capture a scene mechanically! This is the first daguerreotype photograph, pioneered by Louis-Jacques-Mandé Daguerre. This involved exposing copper plates of underdeveloped photographs to mercury vapor thus producing a light effect due to formation of an amalgam and taking much less time than developing photographs in those days. And this was discovered accidentally when one night he left an undeveloped plate in a drawer inside which a thermometer had unknowingly broken only to find the photo plate developed the next morning.

ReplyDeleteIt was developed by Louis Daguerre together with Joseph Nicéphore Niépce. Niepce had produced the first photographic image in the camera obscura using asphaltum on a copper plate sensitised with lavender oil that required very long exposures.
