Only Paddy got this one correct!
The connection is indeed Shantanu Moitra, the music composer.
In his recently released Bengali book, Moitra describes how, at a foreign airport, he got the chance to meet his soccer hero Diego Maradona, and even got a shop attendant to click a photograph of them together on his own mobile phone. But the papparazzi invaded, and they had to run. In all the hurry, Moitra still rues leaving his cell phone behind with the shop attendant!
In the same book, Moitra mentions how, as a school student, he used to be part of a group that used to send posters full of signatures to South Africa for the release of Nelson Mandela. Then, one day after his release, Mendela did come to visit Moitra’s school, and thanked the people. Accompanying them was Miriam Makeba aka Mama Africa, whose song ‘Malaika’ was one of Moitra’s favourites. He did not know she was there, and when asked by his teachers to welcome Mandela with a song, chose ‘Malaika’! Mama Africa was so impressed that she asked Moitra to do an encore, and sang along with him!
Prasoon Joshi and Jaideep Sahni debuted as lyricists in the same album that Moitra debuted as the music composer. The album was Ab Ke Sawan, and the singer was Shubha Mudgal.
When Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay’s story Parineeta was given a new twist earlier in this century, Moitra composed the music for it.
Moitra shares a penchant for astrology with Gulzar. In fact, he even talks in his book about how sad Gulzar was when Pluto was stripped off its ‘planet’ status!
