Till date, only one person has refused the Bharat Ratna, and only once has a person’s Bharat Ratna award been withdrawn. These are two separate incidents, mind you. All you have to tell me is the names of these two individuals, and why was it withdrawn in one instance, and refused in the other.
Happy quizzing, and have a nice life, folks!

Six answers, and all of them are correct! Maulana Abul Kalam Azad refused it in 1960s because he felt that those in the committee that chose the recipients of the Bharat Ratna should not receive it. Meanwhile, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose was given the award posthumously, but it was withdrawn because the committee could not provide total proof that he had died!
Refused by Abul Kalam Azad, the then education minister of Govt. of India. Reason he believed that those who nominate people for the award should not be recipients themselves.
ReplyDeleteWithdrawn for Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose (posthumous) as the award committee could not prove conclusively that Bose is dead and hence there was a technical problem.
