This one is for a certain section of the patrons of this website.

I received a message yesterday from someone who told me that he visits this website regularly, although he rarely knows the answers to the questions. This one’s for you, boss.

X’s first two stints on television saw him playing a character surrounded by a very specific type of performance artists, and an employee of the armed forces. X also made a few appearances in other television serials at that time. His film debut was in a Hema Malini production. One of X’s flicks went on to become the first Indian film to be featured in the UK Top 10 in 1998. A few years later, X joined the ranks of the likes of KL Saigal and Dilip Kumar when he played a certain role. Another few years later, Abhay Deol joined the ranks too! Simply identify X.

Easy, I know. answer away! The more, the merrier!

Happy quizzing, and have a nice life, folks!

Fifteen answers here, and all pointing towards SRK, which is correct. However, someone on FB tried to say that it was Bimal Roy! No matter, folks, accidents happen! Meanwhile, from the replies, I gather that none of you are big fans of SRK. So here are some more jokes bashing him.

  • Given the manner in which SRK (at least in some roles) stammers at the letter ‘k’, the most sadistic punishment one can give him is to get him to name all the Ekta Kapoor serials one after the other!
  • Why is his name Shah Rukh? Kyun ki, woh ;ruk ruk’ ke bolta hai! [Lame, I know, but still makes me smile.]

Riddle me this, and you will have a very rewarding graphic for it tomorrow!

The Forbes Fictional 15 is a list released periodically by Forbes magazine, and lists the 15 richest fictional characters. In the 2010 list, Richie Rich is #3 and Scrooge McDuck is #2. Which 370-year-old resident of Washington, USA, with earnings chiefly from long-term investments and compund interests, is #1?

Happy quizzing, and have a nice life, folks!

***************

Sorry, Santa Claus has been taken off the ‘fictional’ list because many children complained that he is real. And Batman figures waaaaaaaaaaaaay down the list. Currently on top is a certain Carlisle Cullen from the Twilight series of stories. Oh, and Omkar, if Edward Cullen is becoming such a bother, show your lady friends the following cartoon. Hope you like it.

And we reach Double Nelson having just crossed the 30,000-pageviews mark!

Here’s today’s question. It’s name is derived from the fact that it was given to India by Canada, and one of the things it uses the most is supplied by the USA. India got it in 1954, and it started working in 1960. After about eight years of refurbishments, it was restarted in 2005. However, after half a century of service, it will be shut down as this decade ends, because of a treaty signed between Manmohan Singh and George W Bush.

What am I talking about here?

Happy quizzing, and have a nice life, folks!

**********************

Six answers, but can’t give it to the ones who said it was the CANDU reactor. I was looking for the CIRUS reactor, CIRUS being an acronym for Canada India Research US. US provides us the heavy water to produce plutonium. However, because this reactor helped us produce plutonium for the Pokhran blasts, according to the treaty, it has to be shut down.

Here’s a relatively easier question.

After The Fox

A ‘remake’ of this film was premiered in the Fiji Islands on December 22, which was yesterday. I say ‘remake’ because the makers of the second film claim that they have brought the rights of the film whose poster is shown above, but have made sweeping changes in the ‘remake’.

All I need is the name of the ‘remake’.

Happy quizzing, and have a nice life, folks!

Easy one.

What was the name of the aircraft-carrying vessel that Indira Gandhi had stationed in the Bay of Bengal to carry out attacks on merchant vessels in Chittagong during the Indo-Pakistan war of 1971, which led to the freedom of Bangladesh in 1972? Hint: Since then, the name of this vessel has been bestowed upon ships of its class made in India at the Cochin Shipyard Limited.

Happy quizzing, and have a nice life, folks!

PS: Many of you will be flummoxed by how we had crossed the 20,000 mark yesterday, but are positioned at nearly 28,000 now! Well, there’s an explanation. The previous counter was added when this blog was already 100 questions old. It was a third party counter. Only recently did I come to know that Blogspot has started its own counter, and kept track of all my stats since the first day! That’s where the missing 8,000 comes from! so now that I am using Blogspot’s own counter, hope there will be less hassles, and less of a problem for you people!

***********

Looks like this wasn’t as easy as I thought it would be. Just five answers, all of which are correct in some way. The vessel was the INS Vikrant and the class is the Vikrant-class, equivalent of Majestic-class vessels.

However, the producer and director were so tickled by X’s funny accent, and how his words and his gestures and gesticulations had no co-ordination, that they decided to write an entirely new role for X, despite the fact that X could not even speak the language that the film was being made in, and even though he memorised his lines, X spoke them with a thick accent, and often confused the genders.

10 answers! And all correct! All four films are based on or inspired by stories/novels written by Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay. As a Bengali, I can proudly say that I have read these and more of his stories, which have a special quality that can’t be translated onto the screen. Often in his narrative, Sarat babu stops telling the story ad delves into the characters’ psyche. Thus we have Devdas feeling like a part of his body has suddenly acquired a brain of his own and is now acting on its own, when Paru refuses to marry him. Thus we have a beautiful description of how Shekhar is effectively handing over the keys to his entire life to Lolita when he is just handing over the keys to his cupboard, and how she is returning more than the keys towards the end of the story. PS: Parinita is a tragedy in the original Bengali version. Dunno if the translated versions have been faithful to his style.
