QR–Cure–Quizzing Realms–479

This one can be worked out easily.
Where

Identify this sporting venue, which has been devastated by a natural calamity that killed lakhs of people.

It was originally built in 1876 as a race course, and was known as “The Esplanade” till recently. It was transformed to cater to another sport in 1927, when it was officially declared a stadium only for that sport.

Pinpointing  the calamity first will always help. Hundreds of those affected by it eventually took up shelter in this sporting venue for several days.

Happy quizzing, and have a nice life, folks!
