QR–Cure–Quizzing Realms–358

An easy but wordy one for the day.

It was started in 1991 by Polish satirist Janusz Rewinski, ostensibly  to reduce alcoholism due to vodka. It was more of a statement of disenchantment towards the country’s deteriorating political atmosphere. However, this ‘joke’ caught the people’s fancy so much, and they started taking it so seriously that the political party actually went on to win 16 seats in Poland’s parliamentary election in 1991!

However, factionalism caused its split later, but not before it had already had a lot of people in splits.

Identify this political entity.

PS: Here’s edition 20 of Mind Your Business quiz on the New Delhi edition of The Financial World.

Should be extremely easy.

Simpsons

The beginning of every episode of The Simpsons has some elements that change. Initially, it was just Lisa’s saxophone solo and the lines Bart is writing on the board as punishment. Here is one of those lines. Something happened for the first time in this episode, and has continued since. In what technological way was this episode the first?

PS: Here’s edition 16 of Mind Your Business, the quiz column published in The Financial World from New Delhi.

MYB - 16

Send in all your answers via SMS before March 20, and you could win a book!

Happy quizzing, and have a nice life, folks!

Six answers, but only four are entirely correct. And someone actually answered MYB here! The answer is: This is the first Simpsons episode to be aired in HDTV.

A connect it is, this time.

1.

THE MUPPETS

2.

The Great New Wonderful

3.

Priest

Identify the first and third, and connect all three to a single person.

Happy quizzing, and have a nice life, folks!

Three replies, and only one gets it, though another came pretty close. I had asked for a specific person as the connection, and that is Jim Parsons, aka, Sheldon Cooper from The Big Bang Theory. He played the human form of Walter the muppet in The Muppets, released recently. Also played a role in The Great New Wonderful. And our priest, Georges LemaƮtre, theorised the Big Bang.

This one probably won’t be too easy.

The Wachowski brothers, the makers of the Matrix trilogy, put in an insane amount of work in detailing their films. For this particular scene, how did they show that the person who had designed this training programme was a lazy programmer? Hint: The clue is in the clip itself!

PS: Here’s edition 15 of the Mind Your Business Quiz, published in The Financial World. Answer all questions correctly via SMS before May 6, 2012, and you could win a book!

Two replies, and unfortunately, one of them is to this quiz. You need to SMS it in, folks! Anyway, here’s the answer. Watch carefully, and you will see that everyone other than Morpheus and Neo has a twin in the clip. This was done to show that the person who wrote this piece of code was lazy, and instead of writing codes that would make everyone unique, he just copy-pasted some parts, making two of each kind appear. To this effect, the Wachowski brothers actually spent two and a half days in Sydney searching just for twins for this scene!

Not too difficult.

What you just heard is an electronica/techno mix of an old song. The new one features in the album MIDIval Times by the MIDIval Pundtiz. All I want you to do is identify the voice you just heard, and tell me the name of the film where the original song was first used.

Two answers, and only one correct. That’s the almost unrecognisable voice of Narendra Chanchal, from a song that was used in the film Bobby!

Shouldn’t be too difficult.

Blank

What you see above is a notice issued by a firm called HBGary Inc at the RSA Convention in the US. Two words are screened out. Give me both words, and tell me the context that led to this offensive. If you already know it, you must be chuckling by now. If you don’t ‘Google baba ki jai’! And don’t forget to thank me later!

Yes, the two answers are correct. The first blank is a group called Anonymous: hackers who first gained notoriety thanks to the Koobface virus that spread through Facebook. What’s shown above is a fallout of the security group HBGary investigating the team and preparing to hand over the info to FBI.

This is my tribute to all engineers who have struggled with Electronics in their first year. By the way, the original is not mine, and neither do I claim copyright to it. And that leaves me vulnerable to SOPA and Sibal, I guess. (I know the discrepancies, but just trying to increase some awareness here.)

what

Simple. Tell me what to words are blocked out from this webcomic. The drawings are a hint as to what they are.

Simple part: Identify the work of fiction this music belongs to. Difficult: Identify the performers of this piece.

Oh, and also, given below are the questions for Mind Your Business Quiz, edition 9, by yours truly. It is published every Friday in The Financial World, New Delhi edition.

Not answered here, but on FB, where I had posted the link. The music, obviously, is from the Super Mario Brothers, but the performers are an eclectic bunch – the London Philharmonic Orchestra!

QR–Cure–Quizzing Realms–350

A slightly cryptic one for today.

The developers of an immensely famous multimedia software attributed a very unusual development with their product to four reasons.

  1. X 5 combines the best aspects of X 2 and X 3 into one player. Hence X 2 + X 3 =
    X 5!
  2. [Y]
  3. We think that a Fibonacci sequence for versioning might be pretty damn cool.
  4. We improved so much in X 5 that we figured it warranted Z.

X is the name of the software. The third reason, Y, contains a somewhat NSFW pun, and Z is the unusual development. Give me all three.

Oh, and also, given below are the questions for Mind Your Business Quiz, edition 9, by yours truly. It is published every Friday in The Financial World, New Delhi edition.

MYB - 9 - Cropped

Send in the answers to all questions via SMS to 09999777553 before 12 noon, January 17, and you could win a book!

No answers again! X was Winamp, Y was ‘Because who would want to see ‘Winamp 4 skin’?’ Z was skipping a version. There was no Winamp 4 after Winamp 3. It went straight to Winamp 5.
